The flight is the part of an Umrah package most people think about least, and it is often the part that decides how the whole trip feels. I learnt this the hard way when I booked my mother on a cheap December package from Birmingham. The price was good, but it came with a nine-hour layover in the middle of the night and a landing in Jeddah at 3am, when she was already in ihram and exhausted.
Since then I have booked Umrah trips for family and friends from Manchester, Heathrow and Gatwick, and I look at the flights first. This guide explains which UK airports fly to Saudi Arabia, whether to land in Jeddah or Madinah, what December packages with flights cost, and the checks I make before paying a deposit.
For December, the best Umrah package with flights from the UK usually means a direct Saudia flight from Heathrow or Manchester to Jeddah, or a short one-stop connection via Istanbul or a Gulf hub. Expect around £750–£1,000 per person in early December and about £1,100–£1,600 over Christmas, sharing a room. Check the arrival time, the layover length and the baggage allowance before you look at anything else.
Which UK Airports Fly to Saudi Arabia
The choice of direct flights from the UK has changed in 2026. British Airways stopped flying from Heathrow to Jeddah in April, so the direct options now are fewer than many people expect.
From | To | Airline | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
London Heathrow | Jeddah | Saudia | Direct, daily |
Manchester | Jeddah | Saudia | Direct, daily, rising to 10 a week from 2 January 2027 |
London Gatwick | Jeddah | Wizz Air | Direct, around 6 a week |
London Gatwick | Madinah | Wizz Air | Direct when operating; check the current schedule |
Birmingham, Stansted, Edinburgh, Glasgow and others | Jeddah or Madinah | Turkish, Qatar, Emirates, Etihad, EgyptAir, Royal Jordanian and others | One stop |
The direct Manchester to Jeddah flight takes roughly six and a half hours. A one-stop journey through Istanbul, Doha or Dubai is usually nine to twelve hours door to door, depending on the layover.
If you live in the Midlands, the North or Scotland, it is worth comparing a one-stop flight from your local airport with the train to Manchester or London plus a direct flight. Once you add travel time, luggage and an early start, the local airport often wins, especially with older parents.
Jeddah or Madinah First, and Ihram on the Plane
This is the question I am asked most, and the answer changes how you prepare.
If you fly into Jeddah, you will cross the miqat in the air before landing. That means you must be in ihram, and have made your intention, before the plane passes it. In practice, most men change into their ihram at home or at the UK airport, and make the intention on board when the crew announce that you are approaching the miqat. Women wear their normal modest clothing and make the intention at the same time. From Jeddah it is about an hour and a half by road, or a short trip on the Haramain train, to Makkah.
If you fly into Madinah, you can spend your first days in the city of the Prophet, peace be upon him, without being in ihram. You then put on ihram before leaving for Makkah and make your intention at the miqat of Dhul Hulayfah, just outside Madinah. Many families find this gentler, especially with children or elderly parents, because no one has to manage ihram on a long flight.
What I usually recommend: for a first Umrah, or a trip with older relatives, Madinah first is easier if you can find a sensible flight. For a shorter trip or a direct flight from Heathrow or Manchester, Jeddah first is quicker and often cheaper. Either way, make sure your package’s transfers match your arrival airport.
Flying with older parents
When I took my mother again the following year, I made three changes and the difference was remarkable. I booked a direct flight that landed in the early evening, I requested wheelchair assistance at both the UK airport and Jeddah when booking, and I paid a little extra for seats near the front so she did not have to walk the length of the plane. Airlines provide assistance free of charge if you request it at least 48 hours before you fly. Ask your agent to add it to the booking, and remind them again a week before departure. It costs nothing and it can save an older pilgrim a great deal of strain.
December Prices and What a Package With Flights Should Include
December Umrah packages from UK fall into two price bands. The first half of the month is quiet. From about 18 December, when schools break up, flight prices climb sharply and stay high until early January.
December 2026 dates | Rough price per person with flights (7–10 nights, sharing) |
|---|---|
| 1–17 December | £750–£1,000 |
| 18 December to early January | £1,100–£1,600 |
Flights are usually the biggest single cost in a December package, so the airline and routing explain most of the difference between two quotes for the same hotel.
A good Umrah package with flights should clearly state:
- The airline, departure airport, and flight times in both directions
- Whether the flight is direct or has a stop, and how long the layover is
- Checked baggage allowance, and whether a sealed 5-litre Zamzam container is allowed
- The arrival airport, matched with your transfers
- Named hotels in Makkah and Madinah, with walking distance to the Haram
- Visa support, transfers between the two cities, and a contact on the ground
When I compare offers, I use a UK specialist that lists all of this openly as my benchmark. The Umrah package with flight options from Islamic Travel show the hotels, their distance from the Haram and what is included, and they are ATOL-protected, which matters most when flights are part of the booking. If a December deal will not tell you the airline and flight times before you pay, be wary.
Seven Flight Checks Before You Book
These are the questions I now ask about every December package before my family pays a penny.
- What time do we land? A 3am arrival in Jeddah means checking in to your Makkah hotel at dawn and starting Umrah tired. An afternoon or evening arrival is far kinder.
- How long is the layover? Two to three hours is comfortable. Anything over six hours, especially overnight, wears people out.
- Is the flight protected? Any UK package that includes a flight must be covered by ATOL. Check the number on the Civil Aviation Authority website.
- What is the baggage allowance? Budget airlines often include only cabin bags. Ask about checked luggage and Zamzam water.
- Can we change the dates? December flights are expensive to change. Ask what happens if a family member falls ill.
- Is everyone’s visa sorted in time? British passport holders can get the Saudi tourist eVisa online in a few days. UK residents on other passports need an Umrah visa lodged through Nusuk by a licensed agent, which can take two to three weeks.
- How are we paying? A credit card gives Section 75 protection on purchases between £100 and £30,000. A bank transfer to a personal account does not.
Everyone also needs a free Umrah permit booked in the Nusuk app and a meningitis ACWY vaccination at least ten days before arrival.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much are December Umrah packages from the UK with flights?
Around £750–£1,000 per person in the first half of December and about £1,100–£1,600 over Christmas and New Year, for seven to ten nights sharing a room.
Are there direct flights from the UK for Umrah?
Yes. Saudia flies direct to Jeddah from Heathrow and Manchester, and Wizz Air flies direct to Jeddah from Gatwick. Most other UK airports connect through Istanbul, Doha, Dubai or another hub.
Should I fly to Jeddah or Madinah for Umrah?
Jeddah is quicker for Makkah but means wearing ihram on the plane. Madinah first is gentler for families and older pilgrims, because you put on ihram later at Dhul Hulayfah.
Do I need to wear ihram on the flight to Jeddah?
Yes, if you are going straight to Makkah for Umrah. You must be in ihram and make your intention before the plane crosses the miqat.
Can I take Zamzam water home on the plane?
Many airlines, including Saudia, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad, allow one sealed 5-litre Zamzam container as an extra item. Always check your airline’s current rules.
Is it too late to book December Umrah?
Not quite, but Christmas packages sell fast. Book now, especially if anyone in your group needs an agent-lodged Umrah visa.
The right flight makes a December Umrah calmer from the very first day. Look at the airline, the times and the protection first, then choose the hotel, and you will arrive ready for worship rather than worn out.
